On Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024, fast-food giant McDonald’s removed the famous quarter-pounder from the menu at over 20 separate locations. This removal was in response to a report issued by the CDC, which informed people to steer clear of the meal after many people had reported becoming sick after eating it. The FDA stated it was likely due to ingredients in either the patties or sliced onions; and these ingredients were temporarily scrapped in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, and Wyoming, as well as parts of other western states. Forty-nine illnesses and one death across ten states were reported, the cases being attributed to E. coli (a bacteria causing severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting).
McDonald’s has conducted a more recent investigation and found that the raw onions served on the quarter pounders are likely the source of the outbreak. As of October 29th, 2024, seventy-five people are infected across thirteen states, and twenty-two are currently hospitalized. The Colorado Department of Agriculture (supplier of beef patties to many CO McDonald’s locations) has tested numerous patties for E. Coli, all of them coming back negative. McDonald’s has since shifted their focus to Taylor Farms, their onion supplier. The quarter pounder is being brought back nationwide, however many states are continuing to serve it without onions, for utmost safety. It has also been declared that McDonald’s is no longer hazardous in any way and is fully safe to enjoy.
