These days, the rise of Artificial Intelligence has been high. It’s everywhere, but you don’t notice it. When you use Face ID on your phone, or when you generate an image, it’s AI that’s working behind the scenes. Everyone is saying that AI will soon become so good, that it’ll even surpass human intelligence. But can that be true?
Think about this: a girl is raised to be the smartest intellect in the world. Ever since birth, she has been learning about the brain’s neurons, how humans see color, and how different animals see more or less color in different ways. This girl has known everything there is to know about color, she could be considered an expert- she knows more about color than the average human. But the catch is, the girl has never actually seen color in her entire life. She’s been seeing things in black and white and has never known anything more. A couple of years later, she undergoes an experiment that allows her to finally see the color that she has been learning about. Do you think that when she finally sees color for the first time, she will learn anything new, or this is how she exactly predicted it would happen? That’s the thing. Can AI learn these human experiences? AI knows so much, it knows everything that one human brain can’t capture. But humans learn things only through certain experiences, like seeing color through our very own eyes, not just studying and being told about it. AI can’t possibly know everything, we can’t expect it to know everything.
The next thing is safety. How reliable and safe is AI? With the widespread population of America growing more hackers, it’s safe to say that you shouldn’t give AI the knowledge of everything that’s going on in your life. AI can create false information, like credit cards, fake clips of peoples’ voices, and bots that pretend to be real people. Additionally, many movies like Ex Machina and The Matrix, capture the dangerous game we are playing with handling AI. In a previous project I did from school, I worked on AI Hyperrealism. This project worked by having 5 AI-generated pictures, and 5 real photos. I then quizzed 8 people I knew and asked if they recognized the AI photos. Half of them were fooled. That’s how good AI is getting- you could probably also get a robot to make you a three-course meal, fold your clothes, and clean your dishes. AI can do amazing things, but is it safe to give them many privileges over our lives?
Besides the obvious safeties, other things that AI could do could be a complete accident. With the rise of auto-driving cars, this could lead to more accidents on the road. AI isn’t perfect, and it isn’t safe to trust a robot to drive. How will you know if it’s going the right way? A busted wire, a crack in the camera, or a slight change in Wi-Fi could cost you your life- and many others. In facial recognition technology, this could lead to many wrongful arrests. As the rise of population grows, it isn’t rare that two people are born looking very alike. If someone is accused of a crime, facial recognition could end up accusing the wrong person.
And finally, what would happen after AI takes over your life? Well, the first one is the most obvious: job displacement. With 8 billion people in the world, the rise of jobs is already bad. But if AI takes over more jobs?
Though AI is something that many people are excited about, and even use nowadays, I’m not sure that it is beneficial for our world. Sure, you could use it, but we shouldn’t revolve our lives around it. We should all take these things into account, and look into the future, with all of its potential, but with awareness of its possible negative effects as well.
