Recently at Glen Ridge High School, a question has been raised at the cafeteria: Is a hotdog a sandwich?
A hotdog is a popular American food that originated from Europe. Also known as a frankfurter, it contains a sausage between two connected, round buns. Many believe that a hotdog is a sandwich. However, many claim that the food differs from a sandwich, saying hot dogs use “a single bun.”
Student testimonies:
One student states, “A hot dog is not a sandwich, for a sandwich has two pieces of bread, and technically a hotdog bun is connected. If you put peanut butter on one piece of bread and don’t have a piece of bread on top, it is not a sandwich, and that is what a hot dog is.”
Another student claims, “A sandwich has bread on the top and bottom, a hot dog has bread on the sides.”
But a different student counters, “It doesn’t matter how the bread is placed, a sandwich is bread, filling, bread and that’s what a hotdog is.”
In summary, the dictionary definition of a sandwich is, “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.” But many still argue that the hotdog is not a sandwich. So is a hot dog a sandwich or not? But does it matter? What is certain is that a hotdog is an amazing treat.
