On February 19th of last year, Netflix announced a fourth season of Outer Banks, set to come out on October 10th, 2024. Fans were bouncing with anticipation, but is the new season any good?
Outer Banks is a popular TV show that released its first season on April 15, 2020, and has since had multiple seasons. In the show, there are two sides of the island — the Kooks and the Pogues. The Kooks are generally very rich and the Pogues are poor. The main characters in the fourth season include six kids from the Pogue side who are on a treasure hunt. After the group of kids found El Dorado, the lost city of gold, they took the gold home to the Outer Banks. The first episode of the new season kicks off by showing us what they chose to do with their new-found wealth: recreate Poguelandia (an island they found and lived on in season 3), but this time better. It’s a happy place for all six of them on JJ’s (one of the main characters) old property. It was somewhere for the Pogues to get away from the world to work and live peacefully—until obstacles emerge.
The Pogues are down to their last gold nugget, which they have decided to save for their property taxes. However, near this time there is the annual Kildare Enduro, a bike race JJ always races, and always loses. But this year he has a good feeling about his chances and bets the group’s last gold nugget on himself. He reveals it to John B (another main character) at the last minute and forces him to race too. JJ loses and the Pogues face a $13,000 bill due in a week. They then meet an old man who believes that Blackbeard’s wife put a curse on his family and he was next on the receiving end. He offered the group a lot of money to find him the amulet that would end the curse and, being in debt, they took the deal. They are now onto the next treasure hunt.
I have not watched all the episodes–only snippets–and even I have found the new season enjoyable. It connects really well with the audience and makes you bite your nails. You get to feel the same things as the characters at the dramatic moments. It requires some prior knowledge of the franchise, but that is understandable since most shows do. It’s not something that I would usually watch, but I did find myself wanting to go back and piece together the rest of the great picture. I would rate it a 7/10 because it wasn’t quite my cup of tea. This is an amazing example of a well-written movie featuring drama, adventure, and mystery. On the whole, a really interesting show with iconic characters.
