As winter approaches, so does the parade of sore throats and clogged noses that signal the start of virus season. The colder temperatures make being outside less appealing, causing humans to retreat into the comfort of indoor spaces. However, being within such proximity to each other frequently invites other threats.
During the warmer months, most respiratory viruses flounder. Spread by droplets that come from the mouth, they are often blown away by wind, never to reach another person. However, when people are constantly indoors, these viruses thrive. They can go on rampages that infect entire communities, taking advantage of humans who cluster inside for warmth.
So, what is a respiratory virus, and what are the most common ones? A respiratory virus is an infectious disease that affects the upper body and is spread through coughing, sneezing, and breathing. Common winter viruses such as the flu, COVID-19, and RSV all fall into this category. Flu tends to come on quickly and last about a week, while the effects of COVID-19 and RSV are less predictable.
The symptoms of these three viruses are quite similar. Flu, COVID-19, and RSV cause coughing, fevers, and nasal congestion. However, flu and COVID-19 typically are more severe than RSV, particularly for older and immunocompromised people. Younger people generally become mildly or moderately sick from these illnesses. Babies can become severely ill from all three. In all cases, these viruses cause disruptions to our lives, including extended absence from school.
How can you protect yourself and others? Make sure to not touch your eyes and mouth. Wash your hands regularly, and when you do, wash them for 20 seconds under warm water. The combination of water and soap washes viruses off your hands. Ask your family to purchase the Healgen flu and COVID-19 test if you experience symptoms. If infected with either one, the school asks you to make sure to isolate until your symptoms resolve. If you test negative for both but have a fever, please follow the school guidelines.
Make sure to have a great holiday season while remaining aware of these viruses. Try to get outside, even if just for a bit. There is warmer weather expected for this winter, so try and take some advantage of it!
